  • So Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, the cartoon we've all been waiting for with the Chinese-American family and the adopted Chinese vocal star... well, we'll have to keep waiting. It won't be airing until February now. I'm hoping this doesn't bode ill for the project. And I hope it comes out on DVD soon.

  • This wait is nothing, really, compared to the real wait. And for some families - like the Burkes, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, it can take 12 years.

OK, really, that's more of a metaphorical wait, but their adoption story is sweet, and the whole story did take more than a decade. Key facts: special needs, toddler, in foster care, boy (very much so):
But within days the boy, who had studied English in preschool, was coming into his own. He ran around the hotel room screaming, poking his sisters Hannah and Abby, whatever it took to get a laugh.

"He was full of vinegar," said Amanda.

  • There are some interesting stories coming out of the Second International Conference on Adoption and Culture at the University of Pittsburgh, which sounds far more formal than fun, but check out the lead paragraph here:
David Clubb took maternity leave the first week of March to be with his wife when she gave birth to their son. Three weeks later he was on a plane to China to pick up their adopted daughter.

One of the families with whom we traveled that first time had a similar story - an experience I can't say I envy, really. I mean, that's a handful. But still, how amazingly baby-fied that house must be.

  • Oh, and you might want to keep an eye on news from China on the 15th, when the latest Communist Congress will take place. They're expected to name the successor to Hu Jintao, who's stepping down in 2012. And there'll probably be some other policy announcements - maybe even something to do with the One-Child Policy and international adoption. Definitely a situation worth watching, so keep an eye out.
