So, Daughter is seeing a speech therapist - a speech language pathologist (SLP). Not because she has any language problems or pronunciation - she gets enough practice talking and talking and talking, after all - but because she has
nodules on her vocal cords.
We've gotten hooked up with a therapist through the auspices of
Child Find, a free "special education program" that handles things like developmental delays and, well, nodules.
The doctor says they got there from Daughter straining her voice. It's common with cheerleaders, grindcore singers and people who scream a lot without knowing how to use their voice. The "screaming a lot" thing seems (
seems) to be one of those things from the Social Welfare Institute. Because while she talks incessantly and has had some
major tantrums in the past (not so much recently), there hasn't been a lot of long, consistent screaming in our house. Some - enough to keep the nodules there. But the real long, consistent screaming must have happened at a point in time when she would have been crying and waiting for someone to come who wasn't coming - at least not before that someone was tending to 40 or so other crying babies.
You never really know when one of those things is going to come popping back up again.
Anyway, if you didn't know about Child Find, they're a government program that seems to be a great asset for dealing with the kinds of things parents like us have to deal with. We found them through our school board, because we have a wise and experienced doctor who said we should call the school to find a specialist. Child Find seems to be all over the place, so if you've got any things that might be from the Social Welfare Institute (or just things in general), try giving them a call.
