Footnote: I just got an email from Jennifer 8. Lee, the author of The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, who points out that the bit with the skull is actually from Iris Chang's book The Chinese in America, who herself got it from another source -- she (Jennifer) actually did a fair amount of independent research while compiling her entry on Pfaelzer's book. So there's another source to investigate, gentle reader.
