I haven't actually read
10 Steps to Successful International Adoption - A Guided Workbook for Prospective Parents by Dr. Brenda K. Ueckert, so I can't actually call this a book review.
I know nothing about the book other than what it says in that press release:
there are two critical factors that influence how the adoption process will proceed: “The first key is to select a country that has a legal framework for international adoption. The second key, then, is to work with an agency that has excellent relations with the overseas adoption authorities.” It’s a formula designed for success.
Dr. Uekert wrote 10 Steps to Successful International Adoption in a motivational step-by-step style that evens the playing field—making international adoption accessible to nearly everyone. She adds, “You don’t have to be rich and famous to adopt. You just need to learn the steps and follow through on your dreams.”
It does sound
interesting, though, especially for those of us neither rich nor famous. (Or, well, all
that famous.)
The release also mentions that Dr. Uekert's book
has a web page with a free sample chapter on funding your international adoption. (Nice that that's the free one.) It seems to have some OK advice on thinking about adoption costs -- break 'em down into short-term, middle-term and long-term expenses (less than a month to more than seven months), with a list of what goes where, starting with submitting an application to an agency and ending with travel. Then it gets into things like tax credits and money market accounts and gosh maybe we should have gotten one of those ourselves two or three years ago....
And Google tells me that Dr. Uekert is evidently some kind of
expert on the court system and its effect on social issues. I suppose if anyone knows paperwork, it'd be someone like her.
If you've read it, lemme know how the rest of the book is.
